If you thought that portable technology was very much something of the late 20th century, then you’d be wrong! This striking image shows a man testing out a portable television goggle set, invented in 1963.

Although TV goggles never took off (imagine the eye strain!) and they look a bit cumbersome to wear, they were massively influential, and probably paved the way for mobile technology in the following few decades, serving as inspiration for future gadgets. Their inventor, Hugo Gernsback, was even named the ‘father of science fiction’ for his foresight in such things!
