A Head for Heights
In the background lies the decimated German city of Cologne, destroyed following the large-scale bombing of WWII. In the foreground, a glamorous young woman in her ’40s hairstyle walks on a high wire, keeping her head despite her dizzying feat.
The photo is one of a bizarre and jarring contradiction and shows the utter devastation that German cities were left in after 1945. However, it also shows a hopeful moving forward of a brave and younger generation, who would learn from the past and head into the future with optimism and resolve in both ways, figuratively and literally.
