36. Into the West

Wow – here’s an image straight from many childhood imaginations! Taken in 1883 in Nebraska, it shows a bunch of picture-perfect cowboys, hanging out outside a saloon bar in the old west.

However, these aren’t your typical cowboys. These are the performing troupe that toured with Buffalo Bill’s vaudeville troupe – a sort of travelling cowboy circus – which was riotously popular in the US, Europe, and the wider world in the late 19th century. Buffalo Bill himself is shown in this photo, alongside his manager John Burke, and a Sioux Indian they also toured with.
