49. A Tragic Oath

Most presidential inaugurations are huge events, held with plenty of bombast and fanfare on Capitol Hill. However, the inauguration of President Lyndon B. Johnson was no such affair, as he was sworn in after the news of the tragic death of John F. Kennedy broke.

The swearing in took place on Air Force One on a  dark day which all Americans have etched in their minds – November 22, 1963. Kennedy was shot in the head while driving through Daley Plaza in Dallas, Texas, and died within minutes after slumping on the lap of his wife, Jacqueline Kennedy.
