10. Getting Handy with the President

This is a powerful image in every sense of the word. It shows the moment Helen Keller met with President Eisenhower in 1953, and the blind Keller exploring the President’s face with her hands as her unique and memorable form of greeting.

Keller was 73 when this photo was taken and was already known and highly respected for her literary feats, completed despite her blindness and deafness. Keller claims that by touching his face in this was, she was able to ‘see’ the president, and feel his courage and resolve.
