While the exact date this photo was taken isn’t known, it’s a remarkable shot indeed: it shows a crew member working on top of a moving submarine… nerves of steel, indeed! The vessel in question is the USS Queenfish Balao-class submarine, so-named after a Pacific coast fish, and one of the key players in the USA’s Cold War naval fleet.

This sub was known as the fastest and quietest model the USA had to hand. It was specially designed to have larger passageways, ensuring easier access by crew members. Quite what this man is doing, we’re not sure – but it’s an incredible action shot nonetheless!
