Born in Manhattan, Harry Belafonte lived on the edge of bankruptcy, until he used his most prominent tool: his voice. He recorded many hit songs, which fused elements from various music genres but mainly revolved around the Caribbean traditional sound. His string of successful hits, including The Banana Boat Song, earned him the nickname “King of Calypso.” Belafonte also ventured into acting, appearing in famous films like Carmen Jones and Island In the Sun. He had been very close to Martin Luther King, and he has been a strong supporter of civil rights movements since the ’50s.
