In 1910, a great flood struck Paris, and the river Seine burst its banks. Parisians aren’t ones to take such a calamity lightly, however, and ones the waters stopped rising, normal service resumed across the city. However, instead of walking or driving, the people simply took to boats and rowed to wherever they needed to go!

It was a major flood, though, as this photo attests. The Seine rose no less than 8 meters above its usual level, and it caused catastrophic damage to the city and its citizens. The flood lasted the entire winter and prompted new initiatives to ensure it never happened so severely again.
