29. A Fateful Colour Photo

With his piercing blue eyes and impressive mustache, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was a striking man. This color photo shows him before his assassination in Sarajevo in 1914, an event which would trigger one of the most important events of human history – the first world war.

This colorized picture brings one of the key moments of history to life. Although he might not look it here, the Archduke had a reputation of being a tyrant – he was known as being a reckless and violent individual, who won himself many enemies.
