There’s something deeply odd about this photo of a mother taking her baby out while wearing a gas mask, but the reality was that chemical warfare was a genuine threat in WWII, and people in Britain were instructed to carry such a mask with them at all times.

The gas mask pram – as shown here – was a terrifying-looking contraption, but it was guaranteed to keep babies safe in the event of an attack. The government even held regular drills with tear gas, so nobody felt in any way unprepared should the worst happen.
