The innovation of the wireless radio in the 1930s left the newspaper industry in a panic – was their time-honoured institution under threat, now that people could get the news in a new and more convenient way? This photo shows the ‘radio facsimile device’ which was dreamed up as a way for the newspaper industry to stay relevant in the modern world.

This machine, shown here in the 1930s, was the first version of what became the fax machine. Capable of printing only 3 pages per hour, it cost up to $250, which was simply unaffordable for people during the Great Depression!
